A Few More things...

I know I already shared some thoughts with you this week, but these are too good to pass up!  FIRST, be sure to read this article about the Church & Culture.  It is a powerful message about knowing what we’re in the business of doing.

SECOND, I want to share some thoughts from Perry Noble, who is someone that inspires me in ministry.  Perry writes:
  • All too often we want to expect great things from God but don’t want to put forth any energy to see them come to pass.
  • Loving the Lord with all our strength means that it is going to take energy and effort on our part to grow in our relationship with Him.
  • We cannot achieve God’s love…we just receive it!
  • If the apostle Paul had work to do in his life (see Philippians 3:10-14), then so do we!
  • Why would God trust you with what is next if He cannot trust you with what He’s telling you to do now?
  • Many times Christians would rather pray than obey!  (All too often people will say they are praying about something in order to delay obedience…and delayed obedience is deliberate disobedience!)
  • Procrastination is assassination of the amazing future that God has planned for your life.
  • You CAN do what Jesus is leading you to do! (see Jeremiah 32:27 and Philippians 4:13)
  • Until you take your next step…you’re stuck!!!  (See Ezekiel 14:1-6)  This is why some people can attend church for decades and remain the same…because they refuse to take their next step in their walk with Christ.
  • The next step that Jesus wants us to take isn’t always easy…but it’s always right!
If we take these teachings seriously, Community of Hope and our area of influence will never be the same.  Now, go out and change someone’s life!

Until next time…

David

8 Things to Share with Community of Hope

1. I hope you were as challenged with Sunday’s message as I was.  Just imagine what it would be like if you truly lived a life that was worthy of the calling we have received everyday (Ephesians 4:1).  Did you pick one of the characteristics we talked about to work on this week (Humility, Gentleness, Patience, Love, and Peace)?  I have been working on patience for a couple of weeks now.  Getting this one down is taking forever <grin>.

2. Thank you to everyone who made the Dinner and A Movie a success.  Once again nearly 2/3 of those present were from outside Community of Hope.  We are making a difference in the lives of people.  In fact, just today, one of the teens who has been attending asked me if the Dinner and A Movie was this coming Saturday.  He was genuinely disappointed when I told him it was last weekend.  I am so excited that we are building relationships with the people in our community!

3.  I want you to live out God's best for your life! At Community of Hope, we think that means being a part of a Life Group.  Life's more fun when you have people around you to laugh with, grow with, and do life with.  The next cycle of Life Groups will be starting the first week of February.  Sign-up to participate here.  Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to grow!

4.  It’s that time of year again.  Time to get your taxes prepared.  Hopefully you will get a tax return!  Then you can take your pastor out to eat <grin> (just kidding… or am I).  Community of Hope will have the 2011 Annual Giving statements available on Sunday.  Any giving statements that are not picked up on Sunday will be mailed to the most current address we have on file.

5.  Have you identified your “High Five?”  What five people will you bless by introducing them to Jesus through your testimony or an invitation to Community of Hope?  Have you started praying for Community of Hope's Easter Service?  I believe we can have 100 people present for Easter Sunday.  Will you do your part and prepare your heart and mind to be used by God?

6.  New Blog post:  If you haven’t seen it yet, there is a new post entitled: Old Dog… New Tricks… at www.mytelios.com.  Check it out and let me know what you think by sending an e-mail to david@gothope365.com.

7.  NEVER Forget… Found people… find people!  Take a deep breath, and then let yourself be used by God!

8. I love Community of Hope and can’t wait to see what God is going to do through us in our community.

Old Dog... New Tricks

They say, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” I have to humbly disagree.  Now to be clear, I don’t exactly feel old.  I will, however, be 43 this year.  Since turning 40, I’ve had the privilege of watching my two boys get married and my baby girl is no longer a “baby” any more.  When I asked the elementary children I drive to school everyday on the bus if 43 is old, the majority of them thought it was. Yet, age has never really been an issue for me.  Notice I did not say I would be celebrating my 29th birthday, again. I am very comfortable with growing older because it is simply a part of life.

As I get older, however, I am discovering I prefer certain things to be certain ways.  Take the common use of foul language in everyday conversation.  I grew up with the understanding that certain words were used only by truckers and drunken sailors, but now I hear children and teens using those words as freely as they use their own names.  I could also talk about music, clothing styles, and even the way I accomplish ministry in the church as I am finding aspects of each I wish would simply not change.

Being a pastor, however, requires me to stay in tune with the changing world around me so I can help make Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection relevant to a world that desperately needs a relationship with God.  This means I need to experience new things and challenge my own thinking regularly. Essentially, this “old dog” needs to constantly learn new “tricks” if I am to accomplish God’s purposes.  This can be difficult in an ever-changing world.

While it may be difficult, during the last several months I have realized it is very possible.  This realization developed as I followed the journey of Matt and Alissa Peppley.  I had the incredible privilege of being a part of Alissa’s life when she was in junior high.  It seems like an eternity ago, but you never forget an amazing young woman like Alissa.  Matt and Alissa have recently gone through a situation in life I wouldn’t wish on anyone.  They had a beautiful baby girl named Anna Joy who died 11 days after she was born.

As I pondered their circumstances, I found myself reflecting on my history with Alissa.  As I did, I realized Alissa has been teaching this “old dog” new tricks as long as I’ve known her. Chances are she didn’t realize the impact she was having on my life, but here are three moments I want to share:

1) We were on a summer mission trip to Canada when Alissa taught me all about applying your make-up in the car.  It was early morning and we needed to get going before she was completely ready. So, while we were in the van heading for the Canadian border, she pulled out her compact to finish her morning routine. Now, anyone who knows me well knows I have an overly inquisitive mind.  It took me less than 30-seconds to start asking questions about why she was doing what she was doing. Alissa seemed to be very amused that I had an interest in applying make-up, but graciously explained every step and answered every question.

At this point, you’re probably wondering what new trick I learned.  It’s pretty simple, really.  I learned I am very thankful I don’t wear make-up. I gained a new appreciation for the efforts the fairer sex makes to look good for those of us who are lucky enough to capture their attention.  Guys, married or not, don’t ever complain about the time your special lady spends enhancing her beauty for your benefit.  We’re lucky to have them in our lives.

2) On another mission trip, this time to the Navajo reservations of New Mexico, Alissa taught me about burping.  It was probably sometime around midnight when Lisa and I went into the kitchen.  Everyone else was asleep, or so we thought.  As we entered the kitchen, there stood Alissa and another one of our teen girls from the group.  Apparently they couldn’t sleep and decided to talk quietly in the kitchen so they would disturb the others.  As we joined them in conversation, I opened a 2-liter bottle of root beer and poured everyone a cup.  Before long, someone let a burp out which led to an impromptu burping contest.

I wish you could have seen this in person.  Here were two adults and two teen girls standing around pounding down root beer and forcing the loudest burps we could come up with.  The most amazing part was that both Alissa and the other girl couldn’t have weighed more than 100 pounds soaking wet; yet, I have never heard a louder burp than I heard from Alissa that night.  She was literally a machine – the root beer went in and a GIANT burp came out on demand.  By the time we had finished, two bottles of root beer were gone and Alissa was declared the winner.

What trick did I learn? I learned big things could come from small packages. I learned that you cannot judge an individual’s capabilities simply by looking at them. How true this is in the real world around us.  Humanity has a tendency to look at someone and judge their capabilities based on their external appearance.  What a mistake! Just think about all the times God used the seemingly insignificant to accomplish his plans. David was just a shepherd boy, wasn’t he? Mary was only a teen girl, right? Of course not!  Both of them were so much more because God made them to be more.  He has made each of us to be so much more than our outward appearance.

3) During Matt and Alissa’s recent experiences, they have taught me about trusting God during the most horrible of circumstances, about looking for ways to glorify God in the midst of those circumstances, and that it is OK to be brutally honest with God regarding the circumstances.  (You can read about those experiences at babyannajoy.blogspot.com)

Now, you might be thinking, “But David, you’re a Pastor – shouldn’t you already know these things.”  I suppose the answer is both yes and no.  I am certainly aware of these things in theory, but sometimes theory doesn’t always match up with reality.  I am human after all. Fortunately, the lessons I am learning from Matt and Alissa will not just benefit me now, but will benefit me in the future both personally, and as I counsel individuals experiencing challenge in their life.  When that happens, it adds meaning, value, and purpose to the horrible circumstances Matt and Alissa have experienced in recent days.

Matt and Alissa, thank you for sharing your life with us. Alissa, thank you for allowing me the privilege of watching you grow up across the years; and thank you for teaching this “old dog” some new “tricks!”

Until next time…

David

Five Thoughts I Want to Share

Here are a few thoughts I want to share with Community of Hope this week:

1. You may have noticed on Sunday morning, I am fired up about reaching our community for Christ!  If you get more excited about watching the new episode of your favorite TV show, or waiting for the newest copy of readers digest to arrive, or cheering for your favorite sports team then for the God of Creation, you might want to revisit your priorities.  YOU have received the greatest GIFT possible in the death, burial and RESURRECTION of Jesus! His life paid for your sins past, present, and future!  Don't miss your opportunity to show him how much you LOVE and RESPECT Him for what HE has done for YOU!

2. I hope you are still working on completing your HIGH FIVE card.
Who are the top five people in your life that you want to introduce to Christ?  Name them... and then start praying for an opportunity to invite them to Community of Hope or simply share the story of how Jesus changed your life.  You may be the only opportunity they have to experience Christ before they die. Don't miss your chance to help them gain eternity.

3. Invite someone to the Dinner & A Movie this Saturday at 6:30pm. There will be a "pasta-bar" with different sauces, salad, desert, etc...
The feature presentation this month is Dreamworks' Kung Fu Panda 2.  This will be a great time of food and fellowship together.  You can RSVP at www.facebook.com/gothope365.   Hope to see you there!

4. Start praying now for our Easter services on April 8th.
Easter Sunday will be the official grand opening of Community of Hope to our surrounding neighborhood.  Not only do we want to cover this day with prayer, but I want to challenge you right now to be 1 of 100 people in attendance on Easter!  Let's fill God's house with people on one of the most significant days of the church year.

5. Remember, FOUND people FIND people.
Are you looking for people who are lost? Check out Romans 10:11-15 to see why this is so important!

We love you more than you know!
  Until next time...

I Triple Dog Dare You!

You’ve probably seen the scene in A Christmas Story where the kids are standing around the flag pole arguing about whether a tongue would stick to the frozen flag pole. (If not you can watch it here: http://youtu.be/_RgCbcT8eEU).  The kids are bantering back and forth with one daring the other to stick his tongue on the pole.  Finally, one of the boys proclaims the argument ending “triple dog dare” and the other boy has no choice but to stick his tongue on the pole to prove he’s right.

Well, I’m not going to dare you to stick your tongue on a flagpole, but I am going to dare you.  I dare you to join me on a great adventure.  In fact, I am going to breech proper daring etiquette and jump to the dreaded triple dog dare. So here it is, I triple dog dare you to join me in reading through the entire Bible in 90-days. Yes, that’s right, I triple dog dare you!

I can probably guess what you’re thinking, “I can’t read the entire Bible in 90-days.”  But guess what, it really is possible.  Let me explain it this way.  Each year for Thanksgiving we roast a turkey that weighs between 18 and 24 pounds.  By the time the Turkey is finished cooking it smells so good I want to eat the whole thing.  On a side note, I’m not really gluttonous; it’s just one of my favorite meals – especially when my wife, Lisa, makes homemade turkey noodle soup with the leftovers.  Now, it simply is not possible for me to eat the entire turkey at one time, let alone over a few days time.  I can, however, cut the turkey up into smaller pieces and finish it over the course of a week or two.

Reading the Bible in 90-days is no different than eating a turkey.  No, it’s not possible to read it all in a day or two, but it is possible to read it over the course of 90-days when you break it  into more manageable, “bite-size,” segments.  To give you another perspective, one resource splits it up into 12 page sections.  Everyone can read 12 pages per day for 90-days.  So again, I triple dog dare you to join me in this great adventure through God’s word.

Now, according to the “rules” of a dare, you can’t refuse.  Of course, in reality, you can refuse, but you really shouldn’t.  You shouldn’t because the benefits are tremendous.  Imagine what your journey with God will be like if you spend the next 90-days (starting 1-9-12) soaking up God’s word.  What a great way to start the new year.  I also purposefully scheduled the 90-days to end on Easter Sunday.  Imagine what that day could be like having spent the previous 90-days reading through the amazing truths that are fulfilled in the death and resurrection of Jesus.

I’m not asking you to understand every deep concept contained in the scriptures.  I’m not asking that you explain every difficult passage.  I simply want you to read through the scriptures and let the Holy Spirit speak to you in the process. In doing so, the Holy Spirit will reveal new understandings and truths that you may have never seen before.

So, one more time, I triple dog dare you to join me on this great adventure through God’s word during the next 90-days.  If you choose to join me, I will send you regular reminders, resources, and encouragements to complete the journey.  I promise you, if you faithfully complete the journey, you will have a closer relationship with God then before you started.

If you are interested in taking the dare, click on this link: http://eepurl.com/h9tJ6 and fill out the short form.  By doing so, you will receive e-mails geared towards completing the journey.  I hope you will join me on this great adventure.  Remember… I triple dog dared you!

Until next time,

David
